should this make me feel happier?

A recent study found that Asian-Americans living in New Jersey live better than any other ethnic group in any other state, based on overall health, education, and income. I’m an Asian-American living in New Jersey and, while I don’t feel depressed or anything, I also don’t see myself as being markedly happier than anyone else. Luckier, maybe…

cool east meets west infographics

I like checkin’ out charts.
Charts rule!
A chart is a handy dandy scientific tool…

Sid the Science Kid.

I love good infographic design. Liu Yang’s ‘east meets west’ series is a great example of concise, witty information presentation. The best infographics present data or ideas in a way that seem both surprising and instantly familiar.

now THIS is a tv show…

remember those arguments you used to have with your friends - like, who would win in a fight, ninja or spartan? Well, Spike TV settles those arguments once and for all with Deadliest Warrior. Awesome concept, awesome cast (ancient weapons specialist, trauma surgeon, computer guy), awesome narrator (sounds like an Asian Lord of the Rings voiceover guy)… in a word - AWESOME.

I’m still shocked at the results of the Apache vs Gladiator and Samurai vs Viking episodes.

I really don’t know what to make of this…

The Restoration of Stephen Baldwin is mind boggling. This is from the Q & A page:

Q- Why doesn’t his family help him?
A- His family does not perceive Stephen’s predicament as a matter of spiritual warfare. They see Stephen’s outspoken Christianity as poor choices therefore they will not help.

Q- What happened to his wealth?
A- When he became an outspoken Christian in 2002 his income went down by 70% when he refused roles with gratuitous sex and violence.

Q- Why does Stephen need personal wealth?
A- Stephen’s influence is in Hollywood. Hollywood worships money and without it you are seen as a loser and cannot be an effective influence to this group.

Q- How much money does he need?
A- From what I read in public court documents Stephen needs several million dollars to pay all of his creditors but he deserves hundreds of millions for his Job like faithfulness in the face of relentless loss and persecution.

So if I’m reading this correctly, Stephen Baldwin, or someone on his behalf, is asking for several million dollars in donations in order to restore his influence in Hollywood? I’m just, I mean… wow. How is this different from a guy on the corner holding up a cardboard sign begging for money (other than the amount he’s asking for)? I have to admit, I find this more than a little disgusting.

easter egg hunt

Instead of the usual easter egg hunt (many eggs in many places), we hide just one easter egg a year and then have a kind of treasure hunt with clues that lead to other clues until (if they’re smart) the kids finally find the one egg I’ve hidden. I did it one year for a goof and now the kids like it so much that I’m under pressure each year to top the previous year’s hunt.  This year had a couple of good clues, including:

1. One where I gave them a circle of letters. They then had to figure out where in the circle the message started in order to decipher it. The message asked them to turn on the ceiling fan where…

2. I cut up and scrambled the letters of the next clue and put them on the blades of the ceiling fan. When the girls turned on the fan the pieces of paper came tumbling down. That was a good one.

3. One of the clues then directed them outside where I wrote another clue in chalk on the driveway.

4. I also had a few where they had to call the grandmother or one of their friends who would then give them a hint as to the solution of the clue.

We usually have around 10 clues before they find the egg and it takes them one or two hours or so. It’s kind of weird to think that this is how family traditions get started but I guess they have to start somewhere. I’m already thinking up ideas for next year’s hunt.

iPad = iWant

Top uses for my (yet to be purchased) iPad:

1: TV viewing. You just know that Netflix is eventually going to stream to this device. Plus, I’ll be able to give it to my kids if they want to watch TV in their rooms.

2: Web browsing. In this case I think the main advantage is portability. I know a laptop can browse as well as the iPad will, but I think the biggest factor in favor of the iPad is the projected battery life. 10 hours on a single charge is a long time. It seems like my laptop starts crying low charge after an hour or so. If the battery life is genuine, I can see this thing being used as the primary family web browser.

3: Apps. Especially when Google Docs is available.  Let’s see, iPad + 3GS + Google Docs + Dropbox + gmail + the app store = universal access to all my documents and programs.

4: Music. I can’t wait to try Beatmaker on the iPad. The additional screen real estate should greatly improve the interface. Hopefully they’ll add synths to the app. That along with a piano-type keyboard option would make this thing a must-have for solo/duo performers.

This list doesn’t even include stuff like blogging, facebook, twitter, gaming, etc… I think this thing is going to sell like crazy. It’s like the Nintendo Wii of computers.

forcing a page reload in IE and firefox

I had a cache problem when trying to browse a new site I created for Bella Design Concepts. My initial visit to the site brought up a directory listing because the server hadn’t been set to use index.htm as the default start page for the directory. Subsequent visits to the site still showed the same file listing even though the server admin changed the default start page to the proper value. Obviously, Firefox and IE were loading the page from the cache. If you run into this problem, a simple CTRL+F5 key combination will force both browsers to load a fresh copy of the page and bypass the cache.

beatles infographics

These graphics showing Beatles info are wonderfully done. I love the ‘Authorship and Collaboration’ and ‘Self Reference’ graphs. Inspiring.

word oddities

Is the word ‘ulterior’ ever used unaccompanied by the word ‘motive’?

Same question for the word ‘fro’. Is it ever used without the words ‘to and’?

Finally, why is the phrase ’spring chicken’ only used in the negative sense? No one ever looks at a young girl and says ‘Wow, she’s really a spring chicken’. It’s only used for older men and women, i.e. ‘She’s no spring chicken’. It’s a phrase that’s only expressed as a negative.

Words are weird.

This is a pretty cool math lesson.
